Fitting in exercise in our busy schedules takes immense effort and organisation and when we have been working the idea of exercising when we get it can really be demotivating. The answer to this is to schedule your workouts in the morning, this alone can be tough but the benefits far outweigh the dread we feel waking up to exercise.
The most important thing when exercising in the morning is to make sure that you have had enough sleep and upon rising hydrate with water. You need to factor in warm up time, cool down time and time to fuel your body post workout. A good habit to get into is to take some branch chain amino-acids which will help protect any muscle tissue from being broken down during exercise in a fasted state.
So what are the benefits of exercising in the morning to help us feel better about early morning alarms? Well the first thing to look at is the large number of people, around 90%, who exercise consistently in the morning develop and keep that habit, so if you can form the habit then it is more likely to stick with you. Upon rising once hydrated and you have popped some BCAA, once you begin exercising you jump start your metabolism into top gear and this effect can last for hours after exercising. Your metabolism will help you burn fat even at rest.
This early morning jump start will also energise you for the day ahead, this will help you tackle your working day and give you the boost to tackle even the most laborious tasks. Many people also find that their appetite is better regulated through morning exercise and better care is taken to eat clean to fuel recovery more effectively, putting people in a much healthier mind-set.
Another important benefit of early morning exercise is linked to the fact that our bodies love an established routine. If you wake up at the same time every day this will give your endocrine system a biological clock to work by and this has your body working efficiently. If your body knows what time it is due to be up then it will begin getting your metabolism ready for wake up so if you get up the same time every day your body will be ready for you as part of the deal. Why is this so good?
Well firstly this makes waking up and getting up much easier which is great if you want to exercise. When you put your body out of this routine you can feel the opposite of the positive effects and it can be tough to get going. Second is that because your metabolism is ready for you getting up it triggers the production of hormones involved in activity and you will feel more alert, energised and focused for the exercise ahead. Finally these same hormones will regulate your blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory functions so your muscles are receiving fuel ready for your exercise program.
For many getting up in the morning is tough but if you get your 6-8 hours of sleep and stick to the same pattern then you will eventually find getting up easy and actually look forward to it. In a busy life this time is personal and something set aside to do something you want to do and usually it is quiet as many are still asleep. This can leave perfect time to exercise, plan, organise and think about the day ahead without any interruptions.
Not only will you become more focused and alert your mental acuity will also increase according to researchers who found that the effects can last up to four hours after your exercise session. If I was to indicate one deciding factor in getting up early and exercising it would be all around time. The fact that our days are crammed full, which means our health is suffering then early morning exercise the way to go, not to mention all the physiological benefits too!
